Community Recreational Initiatives Society Charity Profile
Community Recreational Initiatives Society (CRIS) is a non-profit organization offering various outdoor and wilderness programs to outdoor enthusiasts with disabilities. Programs offered by CRIS vary, depending on the activity, the location, and the participant's abilities. Whether you are an experienced outdoor, wilderness enthusiast or just want a first-time experience on local park trails or lakes, CRIS has a program suited for you. With short hourly strolls down park trails or a relaxing shoreline paddle, the types of experiences we offer are limited only by our societal boundaries. Summiting mountain peaks, paddling pristine waterways, or hiking in remote areas are only some of the possibilities.
Community Recreational Initiatives Society (CRIS) was founded in 2001 by outdoor enthusiast, Troy Becker, who continues as president. The society is registered as a non-profit organization in the province of British Columbia and federally registered as a recognized charity.
Based out of Kelowna, BC, Canada, CRIS endeavors to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to experience a variety of outdoor and wilderness environments through the human power of such equipment as kayaks and adaptive hiking chairs. CRIS is about adapting to the wilderness to make parks and waterways accessible to all outdoor enthusiasts.
Our boundaries are limited only by the imaginations and desires of our participants.
Mission: To provide relief to people with physical and mental disabilities by developing and implementing outdoor and wilderness recreation programs in order to promote independence, assist with integration, reduce isolation and improve mental well-being.

Community Recreational Initiatives Society Volunteer Information
Do you enjoy being outdoors? Do you enjoy helping others and bring a smile to their face?
Do you have the desire to make dreams come true?
As a volunteer with CRIS you can assist people with disabilities achieve greater independence, improve mental and physical health and reduce isolation through paddling, cycling and hiking in the outdoors.
CRIS is continually welcoming new volunteers. You do not need to be an experienced outdoors person or kayaker to volunteer.
CRIS requires volunteers who are interested in helping people with disabilities enjoy the outdoors and increase the accessibility and awareness in our communities.
CRIS has volunteers of various backgrounds and interests who donate their time and resources in many facets of the organization.
CRIS volunteers are an integral part in the society, along with assisting with the physical function of caring out hiking and paddling programs volunteers assist with office administration, media/public relations, fundraising, and coordinating programs.
With an increasing volunteer base, the society is able to continually expand its programs and the number of people it can offer services to.
