YWCA of San Diego County View Charity Profile
The YWCA of San Diego County provides women and families with the shelter and services they need to escape homelessness and domestic violence. Our menu of programs and services - including residential programs, counseling, legal support and career assistance - are designed to accommodate the physical, emotional, intellectual and social services needs of homeless women and families as well as those facing domestic violence issues.
We adhere to the philosophy of "teaching people to fish" rather than merely "providing them with fish." This approach has been very successful, as more than 70 percent of the who are able to complete the program are able to obtain employment and permanent housing, so they can maintain a stable, self-sufficient lifestyle.
The YWCA receives some government funding, but each year we rely on the community to donate the additional funds needed to support the women and children who turn to us for a safe environment in which to rebuild their lives. We are also fortunate to have a large contingent of volunteers, whose donations of time and energy are invaluable to our mission.
The mission of the YWCA is to increase safety, promote healing, foster empowerment, and give hope to women and families through innovative programs, services and advocacy.

YWCA of San Diego County Volunteer Information
Volunteerism is crucial to success in many areas of the YWCA's community programs and outreach. We value the volunteers who contribute their time to assist their community and help to maintain the effectiveness of our programs.
We have several programs in need of volunteers. Among them are:
Cortez Hill Family Center: The Family Center is a transitional housing complex that provides homeless children and their parent(s) with food, shelter, legal support, and job assistance. The Children's Coordinators are always in need of volunteers to help the children with their homework, coordinate activities, act as mentors, etc. See positions available.
Becky's House and Emergency Domestic Violence Shelter: These programs need volunteers to help with childcare, tutoring, activity leadership and art therapy. The YWCA requires all emergency shelter volunteers to complete a 40-hour training program, which covers a variety of issues surrounding domestic violence. See positions available.
PASSAGES: PASSAGES provides single homeless women with a safe place to live and the resources to re-establish themselves in the workforce and obtain permanent housing. Volunteers teach specialized classes such as cooking and yoga, act as guest speakers, or provide the women with services like haircuts and manicures.

YWCA of San Diego County Donation Information
The success of the YWCA depends heavily upon the support of the community to continue services to survivors of domestic violence and homeless families. Government funding for these programs provides less than 50% of the budget. The additional funds must be raised through the community and through the generosity of individual donors, businesses, corporations, foundations and community groups.
