DEERS Low Income Taxpayer Clinic Charity Profile
The Delta Economic Education Resource Service (DEERS) Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) provides free tax controversy advice, representation, andassistance to the low income taxpayers and individuals who speak English as a second language (ESL) in the tri-state Delta area of eastern Arkansas, northen Mississippi and western Tennessee.
The program is designed to help low-income taxpayers resolve federal tax controversies under $50,000 per year. Although this project does not assist in tax preparation for the current tax year, the program can assist in a variety of other areas.
DEERS Low Income Taxpayer Clinic Volunteer Information
DEERS' LITC is continually seeking CPAs, attorneys and other tax professionals to collaborate with its efforts to provide pro-bono advice and/or legal representation to low-income and ESL individuals and families that face controversy with the Internal Revenue Service. Volunteer assistance to residents of Eastern Arkansas, Mississippi and Shelby County areas include:
Helping taxpayers interpret letters they have received from the IRS regarding their tax returns. Helping those who do not have a social security number file a tax return by obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. Assisting taxpayers who have received an examination (audit) notice or who are involved with the Appeals Division of the IRS.And other tax related matters.
The Clinic is open Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 12 Noon to 6 P. M. and Friday 10 A. M. to 2 P. M. and Saturday by appointment. Ideally, volunteers should make a twice a month commitment.
