The Center for Desert Archaeology, a private nonprofit organization, promotes the stewardship of archaeological and historic resources in the American Southwest and Mexican Northwest through active research, preservation, and public education. Research - Active research projects are increasing knowledge and understanding of our shared past Preservation - Key prehistoric sites are now permanently protected, thanks to partnerships between private landowners and the Center Education - The Center's publications and outreach programs bring the messages of preservation archaeology to a wide audience. Through coordinated research, education, and partnership programs, we:
Identify important places from our past
Foster public understanding of our heritage
Build consensus about preservation priorities
Achieve long-term preservation of archaeological sites, buildings, and historic landscapes
The American Southwest and Mexican Northwest encompasses some of the most impressive archaeological sites in North America: Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde, Casa Grande, Cerro de las Trincheras, and Casas Grandes. The impressive constructions at these sites and many others have long stimulated public interest and have led to the establishment of national, state, and local parks and monuments.
However, it is an illusion to assume that government involvement, even on this relatively large scale, is truly achieving adequate preservation of our cultural heritage. Erosion, urban and rural development, and long-term vandalism take a dramatic toll on our archaeological and historical resources.
The goal of Heritage Southwest is to build a preservation archaeology network, combining research, preservation, and education in ways that will help stem these ongoing losses.

Center For Desert Archaeology Volunteer Information
Volunteers play crucial roles in most Center for Desert Archaeology research projects, and also assist in implementing preservation tactics and public outreach. Public participation is essential. The Center could not accomplish the work of preservation archaeology without its volunteers.
All current Center members are eligible to volunteer. Because of the nature of our work, you must be in adequate physical condition to do fairly strenuous work outdoors.
Not normally. Motivated middle and high school students may qualify to work as volunteers.
Field volunteer jobs include excavation, survey, and mapping projects. We can also connect you with the Arizona Site Stewards, a volunteer program to monitor threatened archaeological sites throughout Arizona. Office volunteer jobs include library research, artifact processing, general office work, outreach, and fundraising. Because volunteers are an integral part of our research teams, many volunteer positions require that you are able to commit to working for a specific, scheduled amount of time.
The availability of volunteer positions at the Center is variable. Each project has its unique volunteer crew requirements. When a new project is beginning, the Project Director reviews the volunteer applications of all current members who match a project's needs, and assembles a crew that reflects a mixture of experience levels. New applicants will be considered for positions as they become available.
You will be provided with any training and supervision necessary in order to insure that your volunteer experience is a positive one. Depending upon the project and your prior experience, you may be asked to attend an orientation and training session before beginning work
Membership starts at only $25 a year, and includes four issues of our valuable publication, Archaeology Southwest. When you join, indicate your interest in volunteering on the membership form. If you are already a member, just let us know, via mail, fax, phone, or email, of your interest in volunteering.
Please remember that volunteer opportunities are irregular. When a new project is beginning, we will contact members who have indicated an interest in volunteering and assemble a crew that meets the project's specific volunteer needs.
