Hand-in-paw, Inc. Charity Profile

Hand-In-Paw"s professionally trained teams of people and their pets motivate children with disabilities to reach therapy goals, mentor at-risk youth in positive life skills, stimulate reluctant readers to improve their skills, comfort the lonely at nursing homes, and ease the stress and pain of children and their families fighting chronic and terminal illnesses. Hand-In-Paw, an internationally known non-profit founded in 1996, provides professionally trained handler and animal therapy teams to help people heal physically and emotionally. These teams successfully address abuse, disabilities, illiteracy, and chronic and terminal illness in more than 50 facilities in Jefferson, Shelby, Blount and St. Clair counties. Research has proven animal-assisted therapy reduces anxiety, lowers cholesterol and blood pressure and improves heart and lung function.

Our volunteer teams have made more than 100,000 beneficial contact visits through community events and participating facilities. At no time has Hand-In-Paw charged for its services. We are funded entirely through the generosity of donors, grant monies and proceeds from fundraising events

Hand-in-paw, Inc. Volunteer Information

Volunteers are at the heart of Hand-In-Paw's work in the community. Our volunteers continue to report that their work is gratifying and serves a valuable role in strengthening and healing families in our community.

It takes a predictable, controllable, non-aggressive animal and a proactive and confident handler to pass all the requirements to work with HIP.

Our main concern is that a mishap from under-trained individuals might adversely affect all providers of AAT, including HIP. This could result in facilities and insurers decreasing involvement with this unique service.

A lot of well-intentioned people don't realize the risk or the complexity of this work which requires understanding infection control, risk managementt, diverse patient populations and animal behavior.

Our volunteers serve in many capacities, both with and without their animals. Because Hand-in-Paw is a human service organization, it takes very special individuals to successfully carry out our work. Before entering into training for any volunteer position, both animals and people are carefully screened.

Hand-in-paw, Inc. Donation Information

HOW CAN YOU HELP Hand-In Paw succeed in HELPING PEOPLE HEAL? There are many ways. Because Hand-In-Paw is staffed primarily by volunteers and the services we provide are free, we depend entirely on financial contributions, in-kind gifts, grants and fundraising events to underwrite our mission.
Considerable resources are needed to professionally train, supervise and maintain our registered handler and animal therapy teams, whose services include medical, psychiatric, rehabilitation, literacy and intervention programs for some of the most fragile members of our communities.
