Hand-in-paw, Inc. Volunteer Information
Volunteers are at the heart of Hand-In-Paw's work in the community. Our volunteers continue to report that their work is gratifying and serves a valuable role in strengthening and healing families in our community.
It takes a predictable, controllable, non-aggressive animal and a proactive and confident handler to pass all the requirements to work with HIP.
Our main concern is that a mishap from under-trained individuals might adversely affect all providers of AAT, including HIP. This could result in facilities and insurers decreasing involvement with this unique service.
A lot of well-intentioned people don't realize the risk or the complexity of this work which requires understanding infection control, risk managementt, diverse patient populations and animal behavior.
Our volunteers serve in many capacities, both with and without their animals. Because Hand-in-Paw is a human service organization, it takes very special individuals to successfully carry out our work. Before entering into training for any volunteer position, both animals and people are carefully screened.
