Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Support for Afghanistan PARSA Charity Profile
The primary objectives and purposes of this corporation shall be to provide education and charitable assistance to the poor in Afghanistan - particularly, but not limited to, the widows who are on the streets begging. We will accomplish this purpose by providing counseling, job training, financial assistance, and income opportunities for this population. Mary MacMakin decided to work with widows in Kabul after experiencing a month and a half of their desperate search for food while helping with CARE's emergency feeding programs in April and May, 1996. She saw that the widows were without their traditional support systems, that they were hungry, that they had hungry and malnourished children, and that they were without skills or the means to work, such as owning a sewing machine and knowing how to use it.
Mary had worked as a physical therapist in the hospitals of Kabul in the 60s and 70s and into the 80s. She returned in the early 90s to teach physical therapists in Taloqan, in northern Afghanistan, and later in Kabul. That is where the name PARSA comes from - Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Support for Afghanistan.
